This Privacy Policy explains how Variable Technologies Inc. ("Variable," "we," "us") collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you use our website and services (the "Service").

1. Who This Service Is For

Variable is a K–5 learning platform used by teachers, parents, and guardians to generate printable worksheets and learning activities. The Service is intended for use by adults only. Children do not create accounts or interact directly with the Service.

A. Information you provide

• Account / contact information: your name (if provided) and email address.
• Role and context information: when you create an account, we ask you to identify yourself as a parent, teacher, or other. If you are a teacher, we also ask for the name of your school.
• Worksheet preferences: each time you generate a worksheet, we collect the inputs you provide (e.g., subject, grade level, topic) to produce your requested content. We may use these inputs in aggregate to improve the Service.
• Uploaded Materials: if you upload curriculum, worksheets, or other documents to the Service to enable personalized content generation, we process that content solely for the purposes of operating and providing the Service to you. See our Terms of Service for details on how Uploaded Materials are handled.
• Communications: messages you send us (support requests, feedback).

B. Information collected automatically

• Usage data: basic information about how you interact with the Service (pages viewed, session duration).
• Device and technical data: browser type, device type, approximate location (derived from IP address), and similar diagnostics.

We use Google Analytics, which may use cookies or similar technologies, to help collect and analyze this usage information.

What we do NOT collect

• Personal information from children
• Student records or academic data
• Sensitive personal information (e.g., financial, health)
• Behavioral profiles of children

3. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

• Provide and operate the Service
• Improve the Service, debug issues, and understand usage patterns
• Communicate with you about the Service (e.g., login emails, updates, support)
• Protect the Service from fraud, abuse, and security risks
• Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell your personal information to third parties for advertising purposes. We may use aggregated usage data to improve our own marketing efforts.

AI and product improvement: Variable does not use personal information to train artificial intelligence or machine learning models. Artificial intelligence service providers engaged by Variable act solely as service providers and are contractually prohibited from using any data processed on Variable's behalf to train, develop, or improve their own models. Data transmitted through artificial intelligence APIs is retained only for a limited period, solely for purposes such as abuse and misuse monitoring, security, and compliance, and is deleted within thirty (30) days, unless a longer retention period is required by applicable law.

We may use aggregated or de-identified data that cannot reasonably identify you to analyze and improve the Service. Use of content generated through or uploaded to the Service is governed by our Terms of Service.

4. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information.

We share information only:

• With service providers that help us operate the Service, including providers of:
  • Cloud infrastructure, database hosting, and authentication
  • Transactional email delivery
  • Usage analytics
  • Security, performance, and content delivery
  • Artificial intelligence services used to generate content within the Service, subject to the restrictions described in Section 3
• For legal and safety reasons, such as to comply with applicable law, enforce our terms, or protect rights and safety
• In a business transfer, such as a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, with appropriate protections

We do not sell your personal information.

We share information only:

• With service providers that help us operate the Service, including:
  • Supabase (database and authentication infrastructure)
  • Resend (transactional email delivery)
  • Datadog and Google Analytics (usage analytics)
  • Cloudflare (security, performance, and content delivery)
  • Apple (authentication services, if you use Sign in with Apple)
• For legal and safety reasons — e.g., to comply with applicable law, enforce our terms, or protect rights and safety
• In a business transfer — e.g., merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, with appropriate protections

5. Children's Privacy

Variable is designed for use by adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and children do not create accounts or interact directly with the Service. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child, we will delete it promptly. Contact us at help@withvariable.com with any concerns.

6. Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as needed to provide the Service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. You may request deletion as described in Section 7.

7. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the absolute security of your data.

8. Your Rights and Choices

General rights (all users)

• Access / Update: You can review and update your account information within the Service.
• Deletion: To delete your account and associated data, contact us at help@withvariable.com. We will respond within a reasonable time, typically within 30 days.
• Analytics: You can limit some analytics data by using browser controls (e.g., disabling cookies) where applicable.

EU and UK users — GDPR

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the United Kingdom, the GDPR or UK GDPR may apply to our processing of your personal data. You have the right to:

• Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
• Rectification — request correction of inaccurate or incomplete personal data
• Erasure — request deletion of your personal data, subject to certain legal exceptions
• Restriction — request that we restrict processing of your personal data in certain circumstances
• Portability — receive your personal data in a structured, machine-readable format
• Object — object to our processing where we rely on legitimate interests as our lawful basis
• Withdraw consent — where processing is based on consent, withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing

If you are a California resident, you have the following rights:

• Right to Know — request disclosure of the categories and specific pieces of personal information we collect, the purposes for which it is used, and whether it is shared with third parties
• Right to Delete — request deletion of personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions
• Right to Correct — request correction of inaccurate personal information we hold about you
• Right to Opt-Out of Sale or Sharing — Variable does not sell your personal information. We do not share your personal information with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising purposes.
• Right to Limit Use of Sensitive Personal Information — request that we limit our use of sensitive personal information to purposes reasonably necessary to provide the Service
• Right to Non-Discrimination — we will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your rights

9. International Users

If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information may be processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate. Where personal data is transferred outside the EEA or UK, we take appropriate safeguards in accordance with applicable law, including Standard Contractual Clauses or other approved transfer mechanisms.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version and update the "Last updated" date. For significant changes, we may notify you by email or a notice within the Service.
